Rumor: Wii Controller Knockoff Called “Newton”?

Jake and 8bit Joystick has a new post with more details about Microsoft’s Wii-style controller. Apparently the device is codenamed “Newton” and is being prepped for a 2008 release.
As with Nintendo and the Wii remote, Microsoft is apparently licensing their technology from Gyration. I noticed some comments in the vein of “what about patents!?” and this would pretty much confirm them as irrelevant. Microsoft would be getting it from the same source as Nintendo at a company neither of them own, giving them little in the way of legal footing.
Obviously at this stage all of this remains rumor and it’s worth pointing out that the second half of this post is entirely wishful thinking and presuppositions. Still, I think what he writes there is very firmly grounded in reality and highly possible. Microsoft absolutely needs to price this around $40 to $50 with a game for it to have any impact. For their sake, hopefully they’ll advertise it a lot more than Scene It!.
